CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos Agrees $35bn for a Divorce Settlements
The CEO and president of Amazon, Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Bezos, an American novelist and billionaire have been agreed on a record-breaking divorce settlement worth at least $35bn (£27bn). MacKenzie will retain a 4% stake in online retail giant Amazon which her husband founded for 25 years.
The novelist will also give up her interests in the Washington Post newspaper and her space travel firm Blue Origin. The deal dwarfs a previous $3.8bn record set by art dealer Alec Wildenstein and his wife Jocelyn. She made the announcement in the Tweeter – her first and only one since joining the microblogging website this month – stating that she was “grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage to Bezos with support from each other”.
Jeff Bezos stated on Twitter: “I’m so grateful to all my friends and family for reaching out with encouragement and love… MacKenzie most of all.”
The tweet concluded with: “She is resourceful and brilliant and loving, and as our futures unroll, I know I’ll always be learning from her.”
Before the divorce settlement, Jeff held a 16.3% stake in Amazon. He will retain 75% of that holding but MacKenzie has transferred all of her voting rights to her former husband. The couple has four children and they are together since before Jeff set up Amazon in 1994, with MacKenzie employed as one of the firm’s first members of staff.
Amazon is now a vast online retail business that last year had generated sales of $232.8bn and has helped the CEO and his family amassed a $131bn fortune, as per Forbes magazine. MacKenzie Bezos, who is a successful novelist and billionaire. She has written two books including The Testing of Luther Albright: A Novel (2005) and Traps (2013). The books were taught by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison at Princeton University.
The divorce settlement is the biggest since Mr. Wilderstein and his wife, who became well-known for her cosmetic surgery, divorced in 1999. Jeff is reportedly in a relationship with former Fox TV host Lauren Sanchez. After Jeff and his wife announced in January that they would part as per a US tabloid magazine.
