Kelly Jones formed his band, Tragic Love Company with neighbors, Stuart Cable, and Richard Jones in the year 1992. At the time, the band was inspired by three of the group’s favorite artists: the Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone, and Bad Company. In July 1996, the band switched its name to Stereophonics and a month later signed to V2. Their debut album Word Gets Around was released in the year 1997 and charted at number six in the UK.
